Gabriela Martina - Homage to Grämlis

May 31, 2019 | 7:30pm

John and Christina Markey Performance Center

7 Washington Street

Malden, Massachusetts

The Artist: Gabriela Martina

Gabriela Martina is a vocalist, composer, and educator. A humanitarian who is passionate about learning about other cultures, helping to develop a sense for the community, and fighting inequality and racism, Martina is a strong advocate of causes that promote equal human rights independent of religious or political affiliations.

Martina sings in four languages (German, English, French, and Spanish) and is currently performing with various groups up and down the East Coast. Martina owns her own booking agency called Red Velvet Sounds and is co-founder and curator of the In Momentum concert series.

Musical and Cultural Influences

Martina’s latest project, Homage to Grämlis is a deeply personal project that tells the story of Martina’s upbringing on a beautiful dairy farm in Switzerland. She weaves a story with passion for home and humanity, hinting of bucolic farms of Switzerland but with an edge of urban sophistication.

Martina sings a delightful mixture of Swiss yodeling, R&B, funk, and jazz, that includes a wide range of musical influences and traditional Swiss sounds.

Homage to Grämlis raises awareness about society’s value of luxury over hunger, a subject that’s interested her since her younger years due to her parents’ work in the community (providing fresh food and classes for kids).

Through this project, Marina is able to critique current food issues by detailing her personal experiences growing up on a farm, eating organic foods rather than the over-processed, genetically modified foods that have now taken over the market.

Her passion for fresh, organic food, as well as her stance on bigger companies submerging small businesses, and the difference between city and rural life are all present within these pieces, which establish the importance of such a piece, and further her mission as a musician.

Meet the Band: The Performers

Martina’s performance will incorporate music by her band: Kyle Miles (bass), Ben Rosenblum (accordion), Maxim Lubarsky (piano), Vancil Cooper (drums), and Jussi Reijonen (fretted and fretless guitar).  In addition, Nadia Washington (vocals) and Gus Sebring (on alphorn) will also join the band for this performance. These performers, some from different parts of the world, hope to bring their own ideas and experiences with the current food issue focused in this performance.
